New Mullae Industrial Village

Team1: Benjamin Erazo Pinela

Mullae is a neighborhood that has historically been composed mainly of industries.

The people who live in this neighborhood are engaged in jobs related to metalworking, woodworking, and other elements related to industry and heavy work with heavy machinery.

The project is connected mainly by three flow strips. These spaces seek to be the main guiding axes of the space's layout, organizing the project and connecting it as a whole.

In the northern area, the first flow seeks to connect the space that currently attracts people due to its popularity. This space serves as a link and an entrance to the new project.

In the center, Kyong-in Street is being restructured to provide more pedestrian space and give the impression of a boulevard where people gather in front of the project's facades.

To the south, a large park is created to give workers a break from their daily tasks, but also to attract the general public by inviting them to make use of the green area.

One of the main concepts of the place is the contrast between heavy work and the lightness of the structures. This perception of the place is possible due to the transparency present in most of the buildings. The ability to “see through” the solid spaces allows visitors to the site to look beyond the facade and observe what is happening behind it, creating a direct relationship with the streets of the neighborhood. This condition also allows visitors to see the industrial work taking place on site and to visually interact with the workers.

As these jobs require heavy machinery, it is essential to have a relationship with the street. Due to the size of the equipment, it is clear that the street must be used as a resource to expand their work and make use of public space as part of the industrial space. This is also an indirect invitation to people to be aware of the work that is taking place, which gives the place a unique identity.

The structure is another important factor of the place. The industries are built on tall, spacious metal frames, which reflect a unique element that currently shapes the trade.

From there, the idea was born to rescue these concepts to generate an urban regeneration project that maintains the unique identity of the place while preserving these three valuable elements.

The plan is to preserve the existing industry. The project is not a new city development, but rather an urban regeneration project that seeks to maintain the same use that exists today.

The aim is to relocate the different industries and their direct relationship with the street. That is why, from a general plan, the industrial spaces are located together with the streets, providing an initial way of inhabiting the neighborhood. A relationship between the street, cargo, cars, and industry allows for a constant flow of commercial activity without mixing with the rest of the program.

Small businesses are used as a formula to enhance and revitalize the neighborhood. The commercial spaces seek to complement the industry, which as a whole will attract more people, boosting local commerce and giving the neighborhood a new image.

Commerce is located in conjunction with pedestrian areas. The project is explored on foot and from the inside. The relationship with the different flows of people coming from various means of transport is shown in the intention to invite people to enter the project and thus discover the different areas from a place exclusively for pedestrians and in relation to commerce.

Based on the existing structure, central corridors are designed as a radical element of the project's form, maintaining its identity but giving it a new twist.

The idea is that the metal structure itself can host various events and uses along the route, including industry and various businesses.
